Safer sleeping guidelines for baby
Your baby’s sleeping position
When it comes to safer sleeping guidelines, the first thing you need to know is that safe sleep experts recommend your baby is placed on their back in the ‘feet-to-feet’ position. Lie them down on their back and ensure their feet are at the end of the Moses basket, crib or cot.
Never put your baby to sleep on their front or side.
Stay close to your baby
The NHS and safe sleep specialists both agree that the safest place for your baby to sleep during the first six months is to have them in a cot or crib in the same room as you, so you can keep an eye on your little one at all times. This isn’t just for nighttime sleeping, but for daytime naps too.
We love the SnüzPod bedside crib because it allows you to keep your precious bundle close to you both day and night, thanks to the crib’s removable bassinet.

What room temperature is best for my baby to sleep in?
Health professionals recommend maintaining a comfortable room temperature of between 16-20 C° (61-68 F). According to safer sleeping guidelines, you should always ensure your baby isn’t too cold or too hot, as they can easily overheat. The NHS state that excessive bedding and sleepwear and the temperature of the room can all cause a baby to overheat.
Monitor your baby’s temperature regularly
It’s important to check on your baby regularly to ensure they’re not too hot or cold. You can monitor your baby’s temperature really easily by gently placing a hand on the back of their neck. If it’s damp to the touch or warmer than usual, think about removing layers to cool them down. If you’re using a thermometer to check your baby’s temperature, place it within your baby’s armpit and gently press their arm to their side to get the most accurate reading.
It’s important to consider cot placement
Did you know that babies are unable to regular their own temperature? That’s why it’s so important to keep their sleeping space away from radiators and heaters so they can avoid overheating. Equally, it’s also important to keep your sleeping baby clear of windows in case of drafts. And make sure any curtains or blind cords are fastened safely and kept well away from baby’s reach.
Safer sleeping: how to prepare a safe environment for your baby
Okay, so we’ve explained the importance of regulating your baby’s temperature and how their sleeping environment can impact this, but there are a few other things to take into consideration.
A safe cot is a clear cot
Keep your baby’s cot/crib clear of any unnecessary accessories. According to The Lullaby Trust, the safest cot is a clear cot. Babies are at a higher risk of SIDS if they have their heads covered, so avoid bumpers and loose bedding, and keep toys away from their sleeping environment. Your baby should be sleeping on a firm, flat and uncluttered surface protected with a waterproof cover.
Things you need to know about your baby’s bedding
Ensure the gap between your baby’s mattress and crib or cot is no more than 2cm wide, and do not use a duvet, quilt, baby nest, wedge or pillow if your baby is less than 12 months old. When it comes to baby bedding, less is more.
